I have become a more new literate journalist by fact checking peoples work regularly to make sure they are using reliable sourcing. Any student who takes three semesters of a journalism course at our high school receives an academic varsity letter for Journalism. This is seen as a right of passage and makes you a more credible and news literate journalist. Every year those who are awarded these letters are nominated to attend the Washington Journalism and Media Conference in Fairfax, Virginia. During this conference you are put into real life scenarios that a journalist would possibly go through during a typical day at work. The news publication that I got put into was MSNBC, which was a completely new experience for me considering I have never done broadcast journalism before. This activity helped me to determine what articles I though were the best and most important pieces to run, whether the sourcing was credible and how much time each story should run for.
